DSTA Cyber Defenders Discovery Camp 2015

Dr Mohamad Maliki Bin Osman - Minister for State of Defence, Singapore, - At CDDC 2015

Earlier last week, one of Singapore’s largest Cyber Security Camp cum competition was held by the Defence Science and Technology Agency (Singapore) or DSTA. The 3 day camp comprised of 2 days of training and one day of the actual competition. CDDC or Cyber Defenders Discovery Camp is now in its third iteration and with a record number of more than 300 students from 22 schools signing up to learn what it takes to be a cyber warrior, information security’s outreach and interest is evidently not shrinking but rather – growing.

Overview of participants at CDDC 2015

Over the 3 days – 18, 19 and 22 June 2015 – participants were exposed to two days of intensive training and an introduction to Cyber Defence where we learnt to identify system vulnerabilities and breaches, fending and detecting against malware as well as building proper (basic) firewalls. The vendor engaged in the training, as a courtesy of DSTA, was ThinkSECURE Pte Ltd.

As a participant of the competition, this competition totally brought Cyber Defence competition to a whole new level. Apart from needing to know how to defend our networks to keep essential devices and services running smoothly, we had to to know how to attack and perform penetration testing whilst thinking out of the usual CTF (Capture the Flag) or pen-testing scenarios.

This year, Nanyang Polytechnic sent students from the Diploma in Cyber Security & Forensics ranging from Year 1 to Year 3 to the competition and our students did not let us down.

Congratulations to our very own Team Rocket 2, they came in first second runner up and will be receiving SGD$4000 cash prize award.

The event’s award ceremony was graced by the Minister for State of Defence, Dr Mohamad Maliki Bin Osman. In his speech, he highlighted the importance of Information Security, in Singapore’s context, especially in the wake of Cyber attacks happening globally and on home ground as well, because Singapore is rapidly growing even more interconnected than before, as we embrace the ‘Internet of Things’ or IoT in the Smart Nation vision.

All in all, the Cyber Defenders Discovery Camp and its tagline, defending our Cyberspace, is very true and all the more relevant in today’s context. Nanyang Polytechnic offer’s one of the most robust courses in this discipline with Diploma in Cyber Security & Forensics, for those who aspire to check out this line of work.

Our most favourite food at CDDC!
